Labrador Retrievers - Breeders - History
The history of Labrador Retrievers is connected with myths and legends. The definite origin of these dogs is unknown. Some speculations on the origin of the breed are really fantastic. Thus, some people state that Labrador Retrievers originated from crossing retriever dogs with the otter. This legend is probably associated with Labrador Retrievers because of their liking for water. These dogs are perfect swimmers and are used as retrievers. Fishermen have always valued them for their ability to enter cold water. Labradors were also used as rescue dogs. In the case of a shipwreck, they stretched a rope to the bank and saved the lives of sailors.
Labrador Retrievers have a long history. It is believed that Titian drew the dogs similar in characteristics to modern Labradors. However, no sooner than in 1812, the Labrador Retriever was acknowledged as a separate breed. Peter Hawker suggested that the breed should be called the St. John's Dog or the Labrador. Finally, the latter name was chosen. The choice of the name is also a mystery. It is argued that the color pattern of the dog is similar to the color of labradorite. Another opinion is that the ancestors of the breed originated from Labrador. One more version states that the Portuguese were the first to meet the dogs. They were very impressed by their zeal. Therefore, the breed's name stems from the word Lavrador, which means "toiler."
The breed's history is not only legends and myths. There are some facts that do not arouse any shadow of doubt. Labrador Retrievers were always loved and cherished. The breed is the most popular one in the United States. British owners valued the dog for its wonderful retrieving qualities. The Labrador Retriever was indispensable during a hunting session. In the 19th century, they were the dogs for the royalty. Labrador Retrievers have retained their outstanding qualities up to our time and are one of the most popular dogs in the world.
